Nature of the research
Fundamental research on language variation and change, social networks, building time series data for data-intensive
linguistics.
Storing, destroying or archiving research material
Storage time of research material for research purposes:
It is an ongoing research project (2018-2028). The time frame depends on external funding. Any research materials
containing personal data will be archived with identifiers. If the research material is archived, it will be archived
through the CSC infrastructure or the University of Eastern Finland's storages.
What personal data is included in the research material?
We collect authentication data through HAKA authentication (secondary data) and our primary data contains born-digital
data, so that they have been user-generated digitally from the beginning. The latter data have been collected for
fundamental research purposes. While all these data accessible here are from an open source, using them as primary
material in the humanities can be challenging, since researchers may face technical challenges related to data access,
processing, enrichment and use. The objective of this research project and the digital interface is to enable easy
access to and distribution of born-digital data for basic research.
For what purpose will personal data be processed?
The purpose for the processing of personal data is fundamental scientific research of broad public interest. Research
fields consist of sociolinguistics and digital humanities.
On what basis will personal data be processed?
The processing basis is scientific or historical research of broad public interest. We operate according to the FAIR
Data Principles (Wilkinson et al. 2016) and our research complies with the UEF's Open Science and Open Research Data
policies (https://www.uef.fi/en/open-science-and-research).
What sources will be used to collect personal data?
HAKA Authentication. We will obtain the name, e-mail address, and the organization of the users who register on our
website.
Transfer/disclosure of the data outside the research group
There is no plan for sharing personal data outside the research group.
Data transfer/disclosure outside the EU or the EEA
There are no plans for transfer/disclosure outside the EU or the EEA.
Personal data protection principles
A preliminary ethical assessment has been conducted on the research: No
The data that is to be processed in the information systems has been protected using the following: Password, and
user registration (Haka authentication)
Pseudonymisation and anonymisation:
The materials contain only indirect or pseudonymous identifiers of the primary data.
Safeguards for any sensitive data:
All personal data will be processed and disclosed only for research purposes and all the participants in the
research agree to ensure that no data about a specific individual will be disclosed to any third parties.
The rights of research participants and limitations to these rights
According to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), data subjects have the right to contact the main contact
person of this project or the data protection officer of the university. For more information on the rights of data
subjects, contact the contact person of this project.
Processing of personal data in this research does not require the identification of the data subjects, and given the
nature of the data, identifying the data subjects is impossible, and therefore, the right to access, rectify, erase
and restrict the use of personal data according to the regulation, as well as any notification obligations and the
right to transfer data, do not apply.
